Or would you rather be a pig?

The real origins of “Pig Latin” remain obscure. Some authorities speculate Pig Latin arose from mediaeval word games played by monks in real Latin. Victorians used “back slang” or rhyming slang which is still employed by Brits and Australians. Modern Pig Latin from English appears to have become popular in 1920s America.

My thoughts are that Pig Latin arose in the labouring classes as a parody of Latin scholarship. Latin was a part of the curriculum requirements for every educated person. But these were the upper class tiffs. The working classes had few opportunities for education. I think Pig Latin tweaks true nose of the ruling class.
