[CJ Hinke comments: “In foramine terrae habitabat hobbitus.”
Marco Walker translation of this complex, seminal 1937 Tolkien title into Latin finally brings this fantasy world to Romans everywhere. The 320-page tome is amply illustrated with Tolkien’s own drawings and supplemented with two glossaries, one for proper names and another for unusual vocabulary as well as an appendix on poetical metres for Tolkien’s songs throughout.
Mi pretiose, I am always delighted by modern children’s books in Latin translation, especially so Hobbitvs ille as within its covers is the first appearance of my second favourite wizard, Gandalphus; the first, of course, is that magus mirabilis, Oz.
We can only hope that the further three volumes of The Lord of the Rings trilogy will follow! Amazon is, if course, in business to sell books not give them away. However, a bit of clicking will get you nearly the entire contents to read online.
